On your wedding day, it is important to have people around you who make you feel beautiful, confident, and ensure that you are having fun, all while creating a seamless experience that you desire. This should not only be true when selecting your wedding party and guests, but this should also be greatly considered when hiring a wedding photographer who will be with you throughout the day.
Choosing the right photographer is so important because once the wedding day is finished, the photos captured will be the one tangible thing that allows you to tell your love story in great detail for years to come.
With that being said, I wanted to share 5 tips on what to consider when hiring a wedding photographer.
TIP NUMBER 1: CONSIDER THEIR PERSONALITY
While it is important to consider the photographer’s portfolio of photos, finding a photographer that you get along with will make a huge difference. The photographer is not only going to be there to share some of your most intimate moments, like you getting into your dress for the first time, they will also be responsible for encouraging your closest friends and family to get together for fun and captivating photos throughout the night. If the dynamic between yourself and the photographer isn’t trusting, enthusiastic or enjoyable, your guests will feel that too! If you don’t know the photographer personally, it could also be a good idea to set up a meeting beforehand to see if they match your vibe and feel trustworthy.
TIP NUMBER 2: DO YOUR RESEARCH ON MULTIPLE PLATFORMS
When choosing a photographer, it is important to look at multiple streams of their marketing and professional work. This means looking beyond their Instagram feed, and checking out their Facebook page, website, blog, and Twitter if applicable. This will display not only their photos but also past client reviews and how they are engaging with their clients and audience. This will give you a much better idea of the overall experience they will bring to your big day from start to finish.
TIP NUMBER 3: CHOOSE AN ACTUAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER OVER A GENERAL PHOTOGRAPHER
There are so many small details that went into planning your wedding that can get missed if you don’t hire a photographer that knows exactly what to look for and shoot. Take your tabletop cards, for example, guest book, your homemade centrepieces, the perfume you wore, or even the earrings you chose for your special day can go forgotten without someone who has the eye and experience of shooting weddings. You have spent months planning your wedding, don’t let a detail go missed with the wrong photographer.
TIP NUMBER 4: CONSIDER THEIR PERSONAL PHOTO STYLE
Every photographer has their own tone and style. Choosing a photographer whose style matches your vibe and personal vision for your photos is so important. Do you like more dark and sultry photos, or do you prefer light and airy? Is your style more classic and posed, or do you prefer authentic, action shots? I suggest saving an album of photos that resemble the vision you have for your wedding and seeing if this matches your potential photographer’s style.
TIP NUMBER 5: ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS
It is important to have reasonable expectations of what the photographer will be responsible for and what final package they will provide you with after the wedding. Before you choose to hire a photographer, put together a list of questions you have, and if you’re having trouble with knowing what to ask, I wanted to provide you with a few things to inquire about prior to hiring.
